Chasing Sunsets on Horseback: The Mendoza Experience You Shouldn’t Miss

Discovering Mendoza
Some places are meant to be visited, others are meant to be felt. Mendoza belongs to the latter. Beyond its world-renowned vineyards and the majestic Andes Mountains, I discovered a way to experience its true essence that felt unlike any other: riding on horseback through the foothills as the sun slowly disappeared behind the peaks.
Entering Mendoza Wine Country
The afternoon began with a pickup from my accommodation before heading toward Luján de Cuyo. As the city faded into the distance, vineyards, rolling hills, and the unmistakable landscapes of Mendoza slowly took over. At the ranch, I was welcomed by a local baqueano, someone who knows these mountains like the back of his hand. After a short introduction and a few safety instructions, everything seemed to move at nature’s pace.
Meeting Mojito
Once I had my helmet on, it was time to meet my horse. His name was Mojito. Before we set off, I was encouraged to spend a few quiet moments with him, speaking softly so he could recognize my voice. It felt like such a simple ritual, yet it created an immediate sense of trust. From that moment on, we would experience the mountains together.
Horseback Riding in the Andes
As we began climbing the trail, the rhythm of Mojito’s footsteps became almost meditative. The sound of his hooves against the earth replaced the noise of everyday life, while the cool mountain air and the scent of native vegetation filled every breath. With every turn, the landscape became more spectacular. Vineyards stretched across the valley like an endless patchwork, framed by the towering Andes that seemed to grow even more impressive as we climbed.
Sunset Over the Andes Mountains
After about an hour, we reached one of the highest points of the trail. Time seemed to stand still. The late afternoon light painted the mountains in shades of gold, amber, and crimson, while long shadows slowly stretched across the vineyards below. The silence was extraordinary, interrupted only by the wind, the occasional breath from the horses, and the gentle rhythm of their footsteps.
As we made our way back down the mountain, the sun slipped behind the Andes and the sky gradually filled with stars. Mendoza is famous for its clear skies, but experiencing them on horseback, far from the city lights, felt almost surreal.
An Argentine Asado with Mendoza Wines
Back at the ranch, the evening ended around a traditional Argentine asado, accompanied by local Mendoza wines. Sharing stories with fellow travelers and the baqueanos over dinner felt like a natural extension of the journey itself: warm, authentic, and unhurried.
A Mendoza Experience That Stays With You
Looking back, I don’t remember this experience simply because I rode a horse through the mountains. I remember how it made me feel. It reminded me that the most meaningful journeys aren’t always about how far we travel, but about those rare moments when we slow down enough to truly connect—with nature, with the place, and perhaps, with ourselves.
