Hike to the Heart of Patagonia: Laguna de los Tres
Contributed By: Verónica Larraburu
If there is one hike that captures the wild spirit of Patagonia, it is the trek to Laguna de los Tres in El Chaltén. With the legendary peaks of Mount Fitz Roy as your reward, this is a journey that asks a little from you — but gives you so much more in return.
I love this trek because you don’t simply arrive at the view. You earn it!
Into the Wild Spirit of Patagonia
The trail takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Los Glaciares National Park, winding through native forests, open valleys and rugged Patagonian terrain. Along the way, the landscape keeps changing, and every turn seems to offer another reason to stop.
A Guide Who Knows Every Turn
Keep your eyes open for the birds soaring above the valley, woodpeckers hiding among the trees and the wildlife that inhabits these wild landscapes, while native Patagonian flora adds texture and color to the trail. Having a mountain guide by your side makes the journey even more special — someone who knows every turn, keeps you safely on the trail, shares stories and little details along the way, and, by the end of the hike, feels less like a guide and more like a friend who shared the adventure with you.
The Final Ascent
The final stretch is the most challenging, with a steep ascent over rocky terrain. When you finally arrive at Laguna de los Tres, and the turquoise water comes into view beneath the towering granite peaks of Fitz Roy, the effort suddenly feels very small.
A View You Have Earned
Don’t rush to take the photograph and move on. Find a rock, sit down, catch your breath and simply look. Feel the Patagonian wind on your face, listen to the silence and take in the immense scale of the mountains in front of you. There is something deeply emotional about standing there. Perhaps because you know every step brought you to that exact moment. Perhaps because Fitz Roy feels almost impossibly close.
And when you finally start the descent, you may be tired, your legs may be telling you they’ve had enough, and you may already be thinking about that well-deserved meal waiting for you in El Chaltén. But I can almost guarantee that you will look back at the mountains one more time.
For me, Laguna de los Tres is more than a hike. It is one of those experiences that stays with you because of how it makes you feel: accomplished, humbled, exhilarated and completely connected to the landscape.
This is Patagonia at its most authentic — wild, demanding, breathtaking and unforgettable.
